Once upon a time far far away in a land called China there lived a monkey called Pippy. He was a very talkative monkey. In fact he talked all of the time.
“People say I have a stubby snout but I don’t think I have a snout at all. I think I just have some holes where my nose should be. It is quite different from many other monkeys. If a raindrop falls in my nose it causes me to sneeze terribly. I suppose that is why they call me the sneezing monkey.” Pippy blurted out without missing a breath.
“My family is very large and many are different colors. Some are black, gray, some are golden and some have lips so red it looks like they are wearing lipstick. My parents told me I have a distant relative called the Pig-tailed snub-nosed monkey but they are in Indonesia. We are often called langurs. I have a cousin who lives in America in a zoo. Many people call him the Michael Jackson monkey because their nose looked so much alike. I think I would rather be called the sneezing monkey.” Pippy continued. He was talking to anyone and everyone who would listen.
“I have relatives that live in the cold snowy mountains deep in the forest. They have long thick fur. I also have relatives that live here in the rainforest. My diet consists of leaves, needles, and fruits. I simply love berries and bananas. I guess you would call us vegetarians.” He giggled.
“My mother, father and siblings live with me here in the trees. We have fun and play all day long. I don’t think I would like living in a zoo because I like the wide open spaces with lots of tall trees.” He explained to the parrot who sat perched in a distant tree.
“Would you just slow down a little bit!” The parrot squawked ruffling his feathers.
“What is it with that monkey? He chatters from morning till night. You can’t get a word in edgewise. Golly what a talker that monk turned out to be.” A tiger who was roaming along the floor of the rainforest roared.
“Did you know that hunters want to eat us and they sell our bones to make medicines? It is bad enough that they use our fur for luxurious fur coats. “Pippy asked turning his head this way and that way to see who was paying attention.
“I’m going to take a nap!” The tiger growled.
“I’m going to find something to eat.” The parrot cawed.
“Well then I will just swing across the tree tops and see if I can find some luscious flowers to snack upon.” Pippy Smirked.
“If anyone wants to talk to me wait until after the rain shower because my nose will get stopped up with rain. I’ll be sneezing all afternoon.” Pippy screamed loudly as he watched the raindrops fall from the sky.
“No one wants to talk to you Pippy! Give it a rest why don’t you?” A gorilla who was feeding her babies groaned. “Be quiet so my babies can go to sleep!”
A hush fell across the rainforest for a few seconds. Then all the creatures continued going about their daily lives. It is always nice to have a few moments of peace and quiet, even in the rainforest.
