Dribbling is the foundation of individual soccer skills. These drills develop close ball control, change of pace, and the confidence to take on opponents in 1v1 situations. The key is providing lots of touches in fun, engaging formats.

Sharks and Minnows

Age Group: U6-U12 | Players: 8+ | Duration: 8-12 minutes

One of the most popular youth soccer drills that develops dribbling under pressure while maintaining high energy and engagement.

Setup:

  • Create a rectangular "ocean" using cones (20x30 yards for U10+, smaller for younger)
  • All players (minnows) start on one end line with a ball
  • 1-2 coaches or players without balls are "sharks" in the middle

How to Play:

  1. Minnows must dribble from one end to the other without losing their ball
  2. Sharks try to kick balls out of the area or steal them
  3. Players who lose their ball become sharks
  4. Last minnow remaining wins and becomes a shark for the next round

Coaching Points:

  • Keep the ball close when under pressure
  • Use body to shield the ball from defenders
  • Look for open spaces to dribble through
  • Change pace and direction to avoid sharks

Progressions:

  • Add specific dribbling moves that must be performed
  • Decrease area size to increase pressure
  • Add multiple balls per player for advanced groups

Gates Dribbling Challenge

Age Group: U8-U12 | Players: 6-20 | Duration: 10-15 minutes

This versatile drill develops close ball control while providing clear objectives and measurable progress.

Setup:

  • Set up 15-20 "gates" (2 cones 2 yards apart) randomly throughout a 30x30 yard area
  • Each player has a ball
  • Multiple rounds with different challenges

Challenges:

  1. Basic: Dribble through as many gates as possible in 90 seconds
  2. Technique Focus: Must use specific foot or dribbling move through each gate
  3. Traffic: All players dribbling simultaneously - avoid collisions
  4. Competition: Partner challenges or team competitions

Poison Snakes

Age Group: U6-U10 | Players: 8+ | Duration: 6-10 minutes

A creative drill that develops close ball control and spatial awareness while providing lots of laughs.

Setup:

  • Square grid marked with cones
  • 2-3 players are "snakes" (lying on ground)
  • Remaining players have balls inside the grid

How to Play:

  1. Players start by placing one hand on a snake
  2. On "Poison Snakes!" command, players dribble to avoid being tagged
  3. Snakes slither on their bellies trying to tag players
  4. Tagged players become snakes
  5. Continue until all players are snakes

Technical Cone Maze

Age Group: U8-U12 | Players: Individual | Duration: 15-20 minutes

Perfect for developing precise ball control and teaching specific dribbling techniques.

Setup:

  • Create a challenging maze using 20-30 cones
  • Include tight turns, straight lines, and zigzag sections
  • Multiple mazes for different skill levels

Progression Levels:

  1. Beginner: Navigate maze with any part of foot
  2. Intermediate: Use only inside of feet
  3. Advanced: Specific moves at designated cones
  4. Expert: Complete maze in under 30 seconds with perfect control

Passing Drills for Team Play

Passing is the most fundamental team skill in soccer. These drills develop accuracy, proper weight of pass, first touch, and decision-making while promoting teamwork and communication.

Triangle Passing Progression

Age Group: U8-U12 | Players: 3-4 per group | Duration: 15-20 minutes

This drill builds passing accuracy, movement off the ball, and develops the crucial pass-and-move mentality.

Setup:

  • Three cones in triangle formation, 10-15 yards apart
  • Three players positioned outside each cone
  • One ball per group, with extra balls nearby for quick restarts

Progression Levels:

  1. Static Passing: Players stay at cones, focus on accuracy and first touch
  2. Pass and Follow: Pass to next player, then run to that cone
  3. Pass and Move: Pass then move to receive return pass before continuing
  4. Two-Touch Maximum: Receive and pass quickly under time pressure
  5. One-Touch: Advanced players only - develop quick decision making

Coaching Points:

  • Use inside of foot for accuracy
  • Pass to feet or into space ahead of running teammate
  • First touch should set up the next pass
  • Communicate with teammates ("Here!" "Turn!" "Time!")
  • Keep head up to see next pass option

High-Pressure Passing Circle

Age Group: U10-U12 | Players: 8-12 | Duration: 10-15 minutes

Develops quick passing under pressure and improves first touch under stress conditions.

Setup:

  • Circle formation with 10-12 yard diameter
  • One player in center, others around the edge
  • Two balls in play simultaneously for advanced pressure

How to Play:

  1. Outside players pass to center player
  2. Center player must control and pass to different outside player
  3. Immediately another ball is passed from different outside player
  4. Center player rotates every 60-90 seconds

Variations:

  • Specify foot (right only, left only, alternate)
  • Add movement requirements for center player
  • Include specific first touch techniques
  • Add passive pressure from additional center player

Possession Game (Keep Away)

Age Group: U8-U12 | Players: 8-16 | Duration: 15-20 minutes

Game-like drill that develops passing under pressure, movement to create space, and team communication.

Format Options:

  • 4v2: Four players keep ball away from two defenders
  • 6v3: More players, larger space, more passing options
  • 5v3+2: Five plus two neutral players vs. three defenders

Scoring Systems:

  • Count consecutive passes (target: 6-10 passes)
  • Time-based challenges (keep possession for 30 seconds)
  • Technical requirements (everyone must touch ball before scoring)
